Nokia Mural 6750 review – One more Nokia handset with 3G

For:

Nokia Mural 6750 has a new metallic design and a brilliant display. The features include Push-To-Talk, POP-based email account, 3G, WAP 2.0 browser, A-GPS and 2-mega pixel camera.

Against:

The slim design is a bit out-dated. The signal strength dropped out sometimes and there was background noise during calls.

The Whiz Kid Speaks:

Nokia Mural 6750 is based on WCDMA (UMTS) / GSM technology that supports quad-band of WCDMA (UMTS) / GSM 859/900/1800/1900. It is a folder type phone. The basic essential features include caller ID, a speakerphone, a voice recorder, call timer, voice dialing, vibrating alert and eight-polyphonic ring tones. The phone is capable for conference calling.

The Mural 6750 has an internal memory of 70 MB. The built-in micro-SD Card slot supports cards up to 16GB. The additional features are Bluetooth 2.1 EDR wireless interface, synchronization with PC and USB 2.0.

The external display has 128×160 pixel resolution, which is located on front side. 2.25-inch internal display has 320×240 pixel resolution that supports 24-bit (16.7 –million) colors. The messaging features include e-mail, instant messages, multimedia messages and text messages.

2-megapixels camera can capture images in four resolutions from 320×240 to 1600×1200. Its features include 4x digital zoom, three white balance settings, three color effects, a 4x digital zoom, a brightness control, a multi-shot mode, a self-timer, three quality settings and standard editing options. The camera can record videos in 640×480 VGA resolution.

The music player supports audio formats like WMA, MP3 and AAC format. The Mural 6750 has two connectors: 1×Audio/video out-sub-mini phone 2.5mm and 1×Micro-USB. 1050 mAH lithium ion battery has a life of 240 minutes of talk time and 350 hours of idle standby time. The included accessories are battery and AC travel charger.

PTT button, a volume rocker and 2.5mm headset jack are located on the left spine. For both charger and USB cable, a Micro-USB port is located on the right spine. We appreciate Nokia for moving towards the Micro-USB charger standard. The camera lens is located on the rear side of the phone. The speaker is located at the bottom and the memory card slot is behind the battery cover, which is not so good because you have to remove the battery to insert the card

Razzle Dazzle:

Nokia Mural 6750 has shinny and sturdy finish with the metal skin. The phone looks a lot like Motorola Krzr. Mural 6750 is 3.83 inches tall, 0.68 inches thick and 1.85-inches wide. Nokia Mural 6750 is slim and weighs around 3.9 ounces. While carrying the Mural, we enjoyed the solid feel in the hand. It is quite unusual to see metal skin because phones mostly come with plastic exteriors.

Inside Dope:

Nokia has given us good music phones, basic handsets and offbeat square models. Now, the manufacturer has launched the new Nokia Mural 6750 phone. Shiny and the slim handset is equipped with 3G support and PTT (Push-To-Talk). It feels solid in hand with the metal skin. The Nokia 6750 Mural phone comes with two-year AT&T service has a price of $49.99, which includes $50 for (mail-in) rebate. The Mural 6750 has inbuilt AT&T Navigator and a Where application for local search, which are based on integrated Assisted-GPS. Nokia representatives told us that the handset is made from 80 percent recycled plastic. The box packing has 25 percent recycled material and the user manual has 10 percent recycled paper. The handset is free from materials like CFCs, benzene and asbestos. Slim design of the Nokia Mural 6750 phone gives a bit of a dated look to the product. This is not a familiar territory for Nokia, its handset have been bulky in the past but were not much of a problem while carrying it around.

Display

The display on the lid is not visible when backlight is off. After activating, it displays signal strength, numeric caller ID, battery life and time. It does not have a photo caller ID.

2.25-inch LCD display has a resolution of 320×240 pixels to support 24-bit (16-million) colors. The display is vibrant and bright. The menu interface is icon based, intuitive and simple. The display font size and color can be changed.

Navigation Array and Keyboard

Navigation array has spacious layout, and it is flush. There is 4-way toggle button with a music key, browser control, camera shortcut, Talk key, End/Power key, two soft keys and central OK button. It is a nice classification of the options, but we would like to have back button, too. The toggle keys can be set for shortcuts and additional shortcuts icons can be added to display. The keys are spacious and flush with large digits; however, they are a bit slippery. The backlight needs to be improved.

Phonebook and PIM features

Nokia Mural 6750 has an address book which can take 1000-contacts. Each contact entry can store two-emails, five-phone numbers, street address, formal name, nickname, company name, job title, a birthday and notes. The callers can be paired with a photo and one of eight-polyphonic ring tones. SIM card can store 250 contacts more.

The basic features include notepad, stopwatch, full-duplex speakerphone, multimedia and text messaging, to-do list, calculator, alarm clock and vibrate mode. The additional features are stereo Bluetooth, modem support, a voice recorder, voice dialing, PC sync, USB storage, POP3 email access and a file manager.

Camera

2-mega pixel camera takes pictures in four resolutions from 320×240 to 1600×1200. The phone did not have flash or self-portrait mirror, however, you can use the reflective skin to get vanity shots. The camera features include three white balance settings, three-color effects, a 4x digital zoom, a brightness control, a multi-shot mode, a self-timer, three quality settings and standard editing options. The camera can shoot and record video in three different resolutions. The video clips for multimedia messages are limited at 42 seconds, but you can shoot for longer in standard mode.

The internal memory is limited to 70 MB; however, the micro-SD card slot behind battery cover supports cards up to 16 GB. The resulting image quality was good with natural colors and a bit image noise. The camera performs well in low light without flash.

3G Support

The Mural is a 3G-UMTS based phone that offers multimedia services of AT&T wireless broadband. It has AT&T Mobile Music (for downloading wireless songs through partners) and Cellular Video (to stream video content). It gives the similar experience like other AT&T phones with these features.

Music Player

A wide-range of formats is supported by Nokia Mural 6750. It include features like an airplane mode, repeat and shuffle modes, play lists, an equalizer and an album art. The advanced features are Music ID applications, music videos and XM Radio. You will also find an application to create own ring tones and to save music tracks like ring tones.

Games, applications and Personalization

Three dedicated music controls to activate/use the player are located just below. These controls can be used when the phone is closed. We did not have any problem while using these thin music controls. Two hidden lights are located below the front flap that glows when you receive a message or call. You can change the colors of the light and turn them off permanently.

You can also download subscription-based Java applications including Mobile Banking, MobiTV, world clock, a currency and unit converter, Yellow-pages mobile, WikiMobile and My-Cast Weather. You can use a Where application and AT&T Navigator for local search, which are based on integrated Assisted-GPS.

The game folder has demos of Tetris, JewelQuest2, Diner Dash 2 and Block Breaker. The full version is available but comes at a cost. The selection of alert tones, themes, wallpaper, animations and screensavers is also included in the phone for personalization. Additional ring tones can be downloaded from AT&T Media Mail service through WAP browser.

Call Quality

To test the call quality, we made some calls through quad-band Nokia Mural 6750 through AT&T service. The resulting call quality was nice but there were a few problems. The voice at our end sounded natural, but it was low. There was a bit background noise during some calls. Occasionally, the signal strength was a bit weak. Nokia Mural 6750 failed to make a call few times.

Some callers did not report voice distortion at their end, but they had problem while hearing us occasionally. The speakerphone call was good, but the volume was loud with minimum voice distortion even at highest levels.

Battery life

Nokia Mural 6750 has battery life of 14 days idle standby time and 4 hours of talk time.

Verdict:

We like that Nokia Mural 6750 has a metal skin. The Mural is constructed with reused plastics, which makes it eco-friendly. The feature set includes 3G, 2-mega pixel camera and A-GPS. We recommend Nokia Mural 6750 if you need a basic 3G phone for AT&T service.
