LG Doubleplay is a distinctive midrange Android smartphone that offers sharp and vibrant display, 1GHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor, great call quality, Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, five-megapixel camera with 720p high definition video capture, DLNA support, T-Mobile’s HSPA+/4G network support, Wi-Fi calling, full Webkit browser with Adobe Flash and mobile hotspot support. Hit the social scene with dual touchscreen displays and slideout QWERTY keyboard, which will provide you surfing, and streaming, texting and tweeting and downloading and uploading all at 4G speeds. With dual touchscreens, the fun doesn’t stop for text, tweet, surf, share or stream; it comes preloaded with playable demos of Tetris, Bejeweled 2 and Simplicity Deluxe.

The LG Doubleplay comes with excellent features for a midrange Android device, but the bizarre design is not for everyone. LG has been a messaging handset foundation for quite sometime from the early days of LG enV feature phones to more sophisticated smartphones like LG Enlighten and LG Genesis. But none of them looked anything like the Doubleplay. It is the first handset to feature dual touchscreen displays and its design is undeniably quirky. The dual screen configuration provides a distinctive multitasking capabilities and the device is rich with features such as Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, 1GHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor, five-megapixel camera, T-Mobile’s HSPA+/4G network support, Wi-Fi calling, mobile hotspot capabilities and DLNA support. The Doubleplay is available for the price of $99.99 after two-year service agreement.

The LG Doubleplay is a veritable brick of phone that measures 4.8 inches tall, 0.63 inch thick and 2.5 inches wide. It is a hefty and large handset weighing 6.7 ounces. The size is softened by rounded corners and gentle curves, and the smooth dull finish along the back and bezel, provides a sophisticated feel to the device. One of the notable features found in this model is the vibrant and luminous 3.5 inch HVGA TFT screen that boasts 320 x 480 pixel resolution along with colorful and crisp text and graphics. The capacitive touchscreen display is quite responsive to swipes and taps, and also impressive is the Qualcomm Scorpion 1GHz processor. Underneath the screen, you will find four touch sensitive buttons for Search, Menu, Back and Home functions.

The LG Doubleplay comes with Android interface of the company that comprises of four shortcuts for phone dialer, main menu, contacts list and messaging menu. In the main menu, the applications are classified in different categories and you can collapse and expand them by pinching out or in. Slide the LG open and you will find a standard QWERTY keyboard, which is split in half for accommodating the 2-inch QVGA screen in between. It allows you to fit up to 8 customizable shortcuts on tiny screen and drop or drag them to move them around. The sub-screen is engineered for quite a few default applications such as messaging, Social+, email, GroupText, browser and music player.

The idea behind dual touchscreen displays is so you can perform two different functions concurrently. You will also find send applications between screens. The micro USB port is situated on the left hand side of the device, while volume rocker button on the right. The power/screen lock button and 3.5mm headphone jack is on the top of the smartphone, while the five-megapixel camera with LED flash is at the back.

MetroPCS today launched their first Android Smartphone, the LG Esteem for their 4G LTE network. The newly launched Esteem is a lightweight variant of the LG Revolution LTE smartphone that was launched on Verizon.

The LG Esteem will be priced at $249 after a mail-in rebate of $100; without any contract. In addition to flash LG’s custom Optimus UI, the Esteem resembles pretty much with the LG Revolution which was launched on, and just like that handset, the LG Esteem also is 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4.3 in capacitive touch screen, rear-facing 5 MP camera and front-facing 1.3 MP cameras, HDMI output, 720p HD video recording and MicroSD slot. The handset will come with the Android 2.3.4 variant of “Gingerbread” which is a lot more up to date than the Android 2.3 “Froyo” of Revolution. Though, the LG Esteem comes with a 8GB storage space as oppose to the 16 GB storage of the Revolution.

The LG Esteem will run on 4G LTE network of MetroPCS, which was launched last September. Apart from the LTE coverage of MetroPCS you will have to fall back to a lot slower 2G CDMA network.

You could also get 90 days of free access to the Rhapsody Unlimited Music if you choose to subscribe to MetroPCS’ 4G data plans of $50 or $60.

The LG Esteem is third LTE device of MetroPCS, after Samsung Galaxy Indulge and Samsung Craft.

Earlier this month, it was said that AT&T was attempting to sell assets to MetroPCS, Sprint, Leap Wireless and some others, for saving their $39 billion bid for T-Mobile, but there were no announcement made.

LG KF 390 looks like a phone which has a lot of pride. The black glossy finish and the lack of any mechanical buttons on the face make it look futuristic. Just like a lot of phones from LG (or Samsung too), this illusion breaks up when you see it up close. It is a plastic and unremarkable handset with just one exception.

Just like other low end mobile phones from LG, the LG KF 390 has some cheap thrills for distracting it from otherwise pedestrian looking design. There are touch-sensitive menu selection buttons located around centre navigation button and are activated when you push up the slider. In our test model, the right and left selection buttons were dedicated to Telstra serves with buttons below them activating music player and task manager. The touch sensitive buttons are nice but I mishit them a lot especially while using navigation button.

Above these buttons on the LG KF 390, there is a two inch display having resolution of 220×176 pixels. The resolution is lower that what I expected from this screen in the first place. A lot of phones these days have 240×320 QVGA resolutions and the smaller resolution on the KF 390 really shows when you navigate menus or watch streamed video. Apart from that, I also thought that the viewing angle was really terrible. Turning the phone on the side for viewing video in the landscape model will fade away the picture and show negative image in very slight off centre angles. This makes it hard for concentrating on the picture.

Telstra has something called blue tick seal of approval which means that Telstra has tested the phone in the remote areas that are covered by the manufacturer. The seal also means that the reception on this handset is superior as compared to the phones which don’t have it. LG KF 390 is the eighth phone to carry this tick and hence it joins an exclusive club.

Reception on the phone is improved as compared to the predecessors but the features are less, considering the price that it is offered for. There is a two megapixel camera for taking pictures and it can record videos too. For browsing speed, you get a maximum theoretical speed of 7.2 Mbps on Next G network. There are all the features here that you’d need in a messaging and phone device but still I would like to remind you that this is not a smartphone.

LG KF 390 also comes with a front facing VGA camera for video calling and there is a microSD card which supports expansion cards up to eight gigabytes. I tried this phone for call quality and found that it is perfect. The speakerphone could have been a bit louder though and less muffled too but it still does a good job.

Data speeds on the LG KF 390 are really good and there is a Web browser that is basic but performs well. I had a great experience browsing the Web with it. The Next G services of Telstra too are good but there are problems with the low quality screen. It ruined the video watching experience on this phone.

This phone has a two megapixel camera and though it won’t be a selling point on the handset, it is actually nicer than other 2 MP cameras I have seen to date. I took some photos in sunny afternoon and the results were quite impressive even though the brighter elements of the pictures were blown out. The price of this phone is the only thing that holds me back from recommending it to you. With a price like AU$559, both Telstra and LG are asking a bit too much.

LG KF390 looks like it is holding itself with a pride. The black glossy finish and the absence of any physical keys on the surface gives it a kinda cool look. This phone has a display of two inches with a resolution of 220×176 pixels. The resolution is lower than what I would have expected from such phone. You get less real estate to work around because of this. Also, I wasn’t too pleased with the viewing angle. Turning thing phone on the sides for viewing video in the landscape model gives a negative image and it is very hard to see the things.

The LG KF390 is quite light on the feature side especially considering the price that it is offered for. There is a two megapixels camera which can take photos and videos and you can also do Web browsing at 7.2 MBPS maximum speed but remember that this is not a smartpohne and if you are looking for a smartphone, I would recommend you the Nokia E66.

There is a front facing camera close to the display for video calling and there is also a microSD card slot which can take up to eight gigabytes of memory. I was glad to find the card slot is located on the sides instead of behind the battery cover. You can easily swap cards because of this. Also, you can also use the LG KF390 as a substitute to a music player.

The call quality of the LG KF390 is quite good and I didn’t have any problems with it. My friends too said that they could hear my voice clearly. However, I wish the volume level was a big higher because talking in environments with high noise is not easy on this phone.

Camera of the LG KF390 takes good quality photos and is a decent performer. I took some photos in streets of California, the characters looked colorful and the results were impressive. The data speeds of the phone are really good along with the well-performing basic Web browser that comes pre-installed on the phone. I had great online experience.

To conclude, I would say that the LG KF390 is a good prepaid phone but the feature set is really basic. The only thing that is impressive here are the browsing speeds but other than that, things are pretty simple. The display could have been better, poor screen ruins the experience of mobile TV and this puts the device in the league of cheap phones.

LG Cu720 is very stylish and shiny phone with lovely polished metal body and display that has mirror finish. This phone breathes sophistication and luxury. You can easily use this display as a compact mirror when the device is in standby mode. The handset is 3.93 inches tall, 0.59 inch thick and 1.99 inches wide and weighs about 4.23 ounces. The stainless steel body gives a sturdy feel in the hand. The slider mechanism is solid enough and it needs a firm push for smooth sliding. It is just like the KE970 but I wish there was some thumb grip close to the chin of the phone for easy sliding. My fingers often slipped on the glossy surface.

Pressing any button on the LG Cu720 will reveal a 2.25 inch screen having mirrored finish. It supports 262k colors and is really gorgeous. The pictures are rich with great looking color and detail. Another cool thing about this display is the multi-angle vision technology which gives a great view of the screen from any angle. The backlight time, brightness and dialing font style can be adjusted. The interface of the menu is really simple and you get choices of either icon or list menu styles.

The navigation array of the LG Cu720 is very different from LG KE970, its predecessor. The Shine Cu720 has joystick instead of horizontal scroll bar. This joystick can be rotated 360 degrees but I didn’t really like it. The joystick was way too sensitive for my tastes and even a slight movement triggered an action that I didn’t want to. Pushing the joystick on the top from the standby screen opens the new text message, pushing it on the bottom shows the contacts list and pushing it on the right and left brings up instant messaging application and MyStuff folder. There are two soft keys on the right and left side of the joystick. I didn’t like these buttons really; they needed a bit more pressure and are quite flat on the surface of the phone.

Sliding open the LG Cu720 will reveal a keypad that is quite similar to Razr. Also, it is quite similar to KE970 keypad. The End/Power, Clear/Back, and Talk buttons are crammed on the keypad’s top which means you will have to bump the fingers on the slider’s bottom for making and ending phone calls. There are some differences in texture of these buttons but the keypad is quite flat and feels too crowded.

LG KF755 is a slim slider phone that has impressive looks and is made from good quality materials as well. The front panel is made up of tempered glass which will easily withstand scratches. I tried poking the display with a pair of scissors and it leave any marks. There is shiny and sleek metallic frame all over except on the top which is covered with leather textured material. The bottom and sides of the handset has rubber soft touch plastic materials for gripping the phone easily and the battery cover is made up of carbon fiber which is the same composite material that goes in spaceships.

LG KF755 has a second camera built in for making video calls and there is also an ambient light sensor which automatically adjusts the screen contrast and keyboard backlighting according to the light in the environment. The most important control element of this device is the touch panel which is equipped with vibration or haptic feedback and there is also blue illumination when the touches are registered. Below this, there are four buttons for Send, End, Cancel and OK all of which are physical. There is also the plastic keypad which doesn’t have very big keys but still is comfortable for typing short messages.

On the left side of LG KF755 there is a proprietary port for connecting headset or charger. On the opposite side, there is camera button and volume control scroll along with 2 more buttons. The menu of this phone is quite similar to previous LG phones except for the ‘Google’ thing which gives you all the popular services by this company like YouTube, Maps, Blogger, Mail and Search.

I loved the browser installed on LG KF755, it is pretty interesting and functional enough. You can tilt the phone sideways for browsing in landscape mode. There is accelerometer inside the phone for this. Also another praiseworthy feature of the phone is its multi-tasking capability. You can launch a lot of applications at time and minimize the inactive ones on the tray. LG Viewty too had this feature but on the LG KF755, you can launch and then minimize as many apps as you want as long as there is enough memory. If the memory is fully occupied, the new apps won’t launch at all and you won’t get any warning. I tried this in my lab tests and it worked according to my expectations.

There are plenty of touch screens out in the market and now they are in danger of getting generic looks. LG GM730 has avoided that with a very interesting edge design. The phone corners are nicely rounded just like the sides and this makes the phone feel like a pebble in the hand. The handset is 109.8mm by 56.5mm by 11.9mm and at weight of 107 grams, it is very light and compact particularly for Windows Mobile smartphone. This gadget will easily fit in to most jeans pockets and handbags.

There is one downside to the compact size of the LG GM730 and is that the space for the screen is limited. The touchscreen, diagonally measured, is just three inches big. This size would have been OK about an year ago but these days, smartphones have really big displays and hence this screen feels too small. You get a resolution of 400×240 pixels which is the same as what you get in Samsung Omnia SGH-i900. This resolution will be really small as compared to the newest Windows Mobile smartphones which have 800×480 pixels WVGA screens. On

Underneath the screen of the LG GM730, there are two buttons for Send and End along with optical pad. The keys are very flush with the phone chassis. You can depress the optical pad for selecting items and it can also be used as traditional 4 way direction pad. During my lab tests, it worked fine but I didn’t like the option of optical mouse as it puts a point on the screen and slows up things.

On the left side of the LG GM730, there are volume controls and on the right, there is camera shortcut and power button. The right side also has microUSB port for syncing, charging and plugging in a wired headset. This is the only connector on the LG GM730, if you want to use standard 3.5 mm headphones, you will need an adapter.

On the back, there is a plastic cover with carbon-fiber like, wavy motif which hides microSD card slot and battery. On the top left, there is a tiny cutout where you will find a five megapixel camera. There are plenty of connectivity features on the LG GM730 and they include GPS for navigation, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and HSDPA. This device is based on Microsoft OS and hence you get a lot of features like Outlook integration with PC, Office document support, and Bluetooth tethering.

Compared to the other wireless phones having slider QWERTY interface like Samsung Epic 4G and T-Mobile G2, the Apex is quite compact. It is 0.62 inch thick, 2.22 inches wide, 4.57 inches high and the weight is about 5.4 ounces. This handset is not as wide as other wireless phones and hence it feels more comfortable to hold in the hand. Also, the LG Apex is far from a thin phone but I could still easily put it in my pants pocket without any problems. The cell phone is well constructed and on the back, there is a soft touch nice finish.

The trade-off on the trim design of such wireless phones is the small display. LG Apex US Cellular has just a 3.2 inch capacitive touch screen as compared to the 4 inch and 3.7 inch screens of Epic 4G and G2 respectively. On the bright side, the screen supports 242,000 colors and it has a resolution of 800×480 pixels. The screen is very bright and crisp so I don’t think that the small display will be a deal breaker. The screen also supports accelerometer and there is pinch-to-zoom support too.

The LG Apex touch screen was pretty responsive in the menus and apps that I launched. However, the scrolling and swiping actions were a bit sluggish. For entering text, the phone has standard Android keyboard, and you can install third party applications like Swype (which is in beta right now). There is a physical keyboard too so you have lots of options here.

LG Apex keyboard has D-pad on the right and I wasn’t really thrilled to see it there initially. I previously reviewed the Motorola Droid which had a similar layout and the experience was not so great. But LG has managed to make it work some how. I was very comfortable while holding the phone and could type with both my hands without any need to adjust the D-pad. The keys are adequately raised above the surface of the phone and are well separated for each. Their size too is good enough which makes typing a breeze. I must praise the manufacturer for putting in discrete number buttons along with search, menu and home shortcuts.

LG Apex US Cellular is packaged with reference manual, wired stereo headset, four gigabytes microSD card, USB cord and power adapter.

LG KF 755 is a trimmed down model of the earlier LF KF750. This phone supports tri-band GSM networks and there is no HSDPA support. There is no 3G support on this phone. Apart from the HSDPA support, the LG KF 755 and LG KF 750 are quite similar. The two Secrets share the same design and they made up of innovative materials like carbon and tempered glass. LG KF 755 is made for fashion enthusiasts and it does a great job of combining timeless elegance and elegant design.

The interface of LG KF 755 is user friendly and very convenient. There are some welcome new features on the applications. The display supports a touch screen interface and there are plenty of multimedia features inside the phone. There is neon backlighting for the touch based navigation buttons which light up instantly to the user commands and it is accompany with a set of blue bright light effects which look really cool.

On the back, there is a five megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. The maximum resolution that you get here is 2,592×1,994 pixels. Pictures taken in bright light conditions look good but in low light levels, the pictures look blurred even if you use to ISO 800 option. This camera can also take videos at 120 fps. There is a movie maker for creating music videos on the phone directly.

The LG KF 755 has good collection of entertainment based features. On the touch screen, there are five discrete buttons for FM-radio, documents, games, photos and music which can be accessed with a single click. The phone can open PowerPoint, Excel and Word files and there is also Google Package for Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and Internet. For gaming, there is an embedded gyroscope so you can tilt or rotate the phone and the hardware inside will react accordingly. I had a great time fishing, throwing darts and passing the maze on the phone.

Apart from that this phone doesn’t have much to write about as a lot of features are quite similar to the LG KF750 Secret that I reviewed some time ago. Maybe LG didn’t put HSDPA on this phone because it was meant for different regions. The LG KF 755 is not much of a surprise for me since I have previously seen the LG KF 750. The only major difference is that the 755 looks a bit more classy and is made for fashion enthusiasts.
